Sisters, the new film starring Tina Fey Pierznik and Amy Poehler, comes out today and I don’t know why.
Universal has had the greatest year in the history of Hollywood, so it’s not like they need another hit, but going up against Star Wars is just suicidal. It’s the film equivalent of debuting a new show opposite the Super Bowl. No one is going to see it. Even people that have no interest in seeing Star Wars and/or want to see Sisters are going to avoid the theater just to steer clear of the crowds (and the characters). Moreover, the film has been completed and sitting on a shelf for about a year, so was this weekend really the best choice?
It’s a shame because we all know that first week sales are what drive the discussion, particularly studio films that boast big names. Maybe the Universal execs saw the flick, decided it wasn’t funny and chose to bury it this weekend, thereby having a ready-made excuse when it fails. I don’t know. It’s possible – reviews for the flick have been all over the board from great to awful – and I’m far from the most objective person on the subject, but I’d watch Tina and Amy stare at a wall for 90 minutes.
Oh well. If you need to sympathetic ear, Tina, drop me a line.
Anyway, I wrote a bunch of things this week so hopefully you’ll check them out.
