Larry Bird once said, “I think it’s just God disguised as Michael Jordan.”
I think God has more than one disguise, because the same could be said of Ken Griffey Jr.
He was the one we all wanted to be. He had the sweetest swing. He could hit it 600 feet. He patrolled the outfield like a mountain lion. He had the hops of an NBA player and the speed of a track star. He wore his hat backwards. And he had the Upper Deck #1 card. Injuries derailed his career, but he still put up otherworldly numbers and did naturally what all of his contemporaries – including Bonds – needed drugs to do.
He was The Kid.
